As you may have noticed, we like our Eisteddfods here in Wales. We have plenty of them. But the Llangollen International Eisteddfod is slightly different as it has a definite global feel to it.
Starting today and running until 11 July, small town of Llangollen in North Wales will welcome singers and dancers to compete in a variety of competitions. Over 5000 competitors from around 50 countries are represented and the festival attracts over 50,000 visitors. Complementing the competitions are a range of top class evening concerts
The festival has attracted quite a few big names in the past – Katherine Jenkins, Kiri Te Kanawa, Montserrat Caballe and José Carreras amongst them whilst in 1955 a young Luciano Pavarotti competed on stage as part of a choir from his home town in Italy. He returned 40 years later in 1995 to stage a huge gala concert to celebrate his earlier performance and to thank the people of Llangollen for inspiring him during his career.
